Sarrià: High and Mighty |
And, eventually the city swallowed up the 10th century villages Sarriá, Sant Gervasi, Vallvidrera. Today, the district represents a curious mix of Barcelona chic and small-town feeling with the C/Major de Sarriá- the main street, with its elegant shopping, combined with back-streets where one can encounter the old village. Beside steaming discos and night-clubs be your idea of a good time, heading for the heights of Tibidabo is still recommended for the unprecedented city views from a bar/restaurant and discos on the Pl.Doctor Andreu. . On the way it is possible to do a bit of Gaudí - sightseeing as well. Near the Pavellons de la Finca Guell there`s the Col.legi de les Teresianes, and further up, by Pl.Bonanova, is the Torre Bellesguard.
The district`s Vallvidrera neighbourhood is the gate to Tibidabo or the tram rather; the Tramvia Blau which transports visitors to the top of Tibidabo - the peak of the Collserola. The tram started its slow ascent to the top in 1901, and is till going strong. To, literarily, get a good overview of Barcelona, a trip to Tibidabo is mandatory.
Certainly not the largest of entertainment parks, but the setting, hovering above the city, seriously augments the experience of the roller-coaster ride! Parc d`Atraccions is naturally a treat for kids, but perhaps the most exciting "ride" around, is up the elevator, 115 m. of the nearby Torre de Collserola. The Norman Foster designed TV-tower is one of the city´s most distinctive landmarks today. Posh nightlife, classy shopping, roller-coasters, hiking in the hills and modernisme sites, Sarriá/Sant Gervasi is very Barcelona, indeed!
