Poble Sec - At The Foot Of The Hill |
A key aspect to what makes Barcelona such a thrill to explore lies in the unique character of the city's districts and neighbourhoods due the topography of the city and due the history of settlement and of urban planning. Poble Sec, in the Sants/Montjüicdistrict (“next door” to Ciutat Vella and to the congressional centre/s of Pl. Espanya) is a point in case. Situated at the foot of the Montjüic hill, it is at "the crossroads" of old and new, urban and rural Barcelona, as the Montjüic area contain (the main) Olympic installations, significant cultural institutions as well as (as yet) undeveloped land. Visiting Montjüic is a day's excursion, at least, to cross a few major attractions off the list; The Castell Montjüic – a former site of torture and incarceration now a military museum. And, less sombre attractions including; The Olympic park and stadium, the Museu Nacional de Catalunya, The Mirò Foundation, The Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, etc. Climbing the hillside from Poble Sec is a moderate challenge for the sportily inclined, yet most prefer to take the Funicular railway from the Paral.lel metro-stop to the Parc Montjüic.
Poble Sec still retain a village-like atmosphere and being so close to the centre (1-2 stops by the Metro to Las Ramblas) the neighbourhood has the privilege of being withdrawn from as well as being fully immersed in big-city life. The dining options here are characterized by traditional kitchens that serve-up regional (and national) specialties well worth sampling. As for “sampling for the palate,” the nearby Mercat Sant Antonì is, incidentally, a good option for doing just that. The liveliest night-life of the city is not far off as 5 minutes by metro or 15 on foot will take you straight into the “swing of things” in the Ciutat Vella. Furthermore, the proximity to Plaça Espanya - a key transport point- ensures that it easy to get to and from the airport as well as visiting the more peripheral areas of greater Barcelona. The plaça being the location of the event halls and the congressional centre, this is a very convenient location for travellers in Barcelona on business.
