Sant Pere - Musical Palace and Palatial Market
East of
El Born
another
Ciutat Vella
neighbourhood is experiencing a transformation of its own and emerging as an area where a medieval past and urban renewal intermingle.
Sant Pere
was home of the textile industry in Barcelona (Catalunya was one of the first industrialised regions of Europe), which is still evident in the main street of
Saint Pere Més Baix
, where the locals come to shop. This is also one of the more multi-cultural areas of
Ciutat Vella
with other cultures mixing with the traditional Catalan way of life. And, like
El Raval
it is an area that has undergone a major “facelift” in the last few years.
Sant Pere
has the privilege of being a quite calm, residential area with a close proximity to the
Ciutat Vella
neighbourhoods that have a more vivid nightlife. To enjoy this side of Barcelona you need only step across the
Via Laietana
into the
Barri Gòtic
–the Gothic Quarter-, or stroll a couple of blocks towards the sea into
El Born
. As a visitor the main draw of the area are two architectural sites worth a closer look:
The Palau de la Música
and the recently renovated/reconstructed
Mercat de Santa Caterin
a; the first being a prime example of the city’s main architectural “claim to fame”:
modernisme
, and the latter an intriguing monument to the city’s knack for modernising a traditional structure (in this case: the market). Parts of a
Dominican Monastery
believed to date back to 1241 have been preserved for public display within the market itself as an example of this strategy of modernising within a historical framework. This project of architect
Enric Miralles
was a focal-point for an exhibition on Spanish architecture at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2006, another testament to this architectural achievement.
Sant Pere
might not be as familiar to travellers as its more illustrious neighbours
El Born
and
Barri Gotic
, but has an atmosphere of its own well worth taking in and a no less central location.
