Barri Gótic - Modern Lifestyle in the Old-City |
|
The romans knew how to organise a city. And, when they chose the little hill of Mont Taber in the area now known as Barri Gótic they lay the foundation for what started out as a humble fishing-port and which would be, in different eras, a Mediterranean empire, a sea-trading power, a battle-ground and a forgotten province before emerging as the stylish, innovative, inviting and exciting city of today .The unique character of the Gothic Quarter is rooted in Barcelona´s first real boom which began in the 12th century and as the Catalan empire grew for the next 200 years so did the building mass which is why a large body of the area´s buildings are from the 14th and 15th century.
These days, however, the Gothic Quarter is not "just" of historical interest but remains a truly vital part of contemporary Barcelona living. Visitors staying here really have their fingers on the pulse of Barcelona within walking distance of great shopping and dining as well as cultural and historical sites. The heart of the Barri Gótic is without a doubt the Placa Reial which today certainly is regal in its appearance. It is a square to take in the street-life from one of the restaurants that encircle the plaza or go out at night for a good meal and/or to a bar, jazz-club, pub, discos etc. Barri Gótic has the liveliest night-life in the city which makes the quiet location of our apartments the more appreciated!
